Neikk
(this is a work i made for school, is about what happens when Gandalf leaves Bilbo and the Dwarves to go for business. things in green are Neikk)
The dragon stared at me, his big eyes shined in the dark with anger…
I had found him.
Those words gave me the clue to find the only survivor of the Revenge Age. When Smaug killed all the dragons, except one.
Neikk was just a baby then. He went into the darkness of the lands beyond the grey mountains and he was never seen again
But I knew he was alive, “Always return”, was the last thing Neikk told me
Then I heard some rumors that said that Neikk had been killed by Smaug, I didn’t try to find him for years, I forgot and I had better things to do.
But maybe now he was our last chance.
…
I galloped on my horse through a long path until I saw the grey mountains. The horse didn’t deserve to go through such dark places, so I left him free.
Beyond the grey mountains there were places that hadn’t been touched by humans, and there, in the heart of the biggest mountain the main house of the dragons was hidden.
When I finally found the entrance to that house, I went in.
The place was a cementery. It was full of old dragon skeletons and the ground was soft because of the ashes.
Inside there wasn’t anything alive.
I sat for a moment; suddenly a sound of a heavy breathing came from a crack on the wall.
I went there, but I hesitated, in those mountains lives horrible beasts.
“Mmrg… Gandalf?” A low voice came from the crack and I jumped back. “Gandalf,… Gandalf!” The voice ended in a growl.
I walked slowly toward the crack. “Neikk?”
“Yes, its me”
I went into the crack, there he was. His eyes stared at me furiously.
“Neikk! My friend, here you are! Who would have believed ? Alive! You are alive!” I was too happy to notice the deep anger that tinted his words.
“My friend?!” The dragon studded up and shouted “All these years, hundreds of them, waiting for you to come for me, but Gandalf, the most powerful wizard, didn’t care about a little disappeared dragon, No!, he had better things to do!”
His words sounded like a dagger in my heart, I didn’t expect them.
“No… No! Neikk, I – I m sorry. I thought you – you were…”
“Dead!” Finished the dragon, growling “Yes, because, like I was saying , Gandalf had better things to do and looking for a lost dragon was the last thing he wanted to do, so he believed in the first rumor he heard. But no, Gandalf” His eyes shone red and his scales twinkled blue as he moved “Im not dead…”
There was silence.
“Neikk…please. You need to help me kill Smaug”
I was sure he was going to accept, Smaug had kill all his family.
The dragon moved his head down, his eyes looked directly into mine, his head was as long as I am.
“Why?...Why should I help you? Why should I go to a war that might end with me? Why” His eyes nearly closed “Why should I trust you again?”
I thought the hardest thing was done, I was wrong, it was nearly starting.
“I promises – ”
“But I don’t trust you and even if I would, I cant get out from here. Years ago I entered through the crack in the wall into this cavern. Years have passed and I was too afraid of Smaug to go out, now, that I don’t care of him, I don’t care to die, I m bigger and the crack is too small for me.” Now he laid on a corner, with his head on his front legs.
There was silence again, Neikk broke it.
“Even in this conditions, I m not already dead. Just one thing keeps me still alive” The dragon stood up and walked to ward me. His words didn’t reflect any emotion. “Revenge”.
Faster than I thought possible the dragon caught me from the cape. I got my sword out and nailed it wherever I could.
The dragon howled and throw me far. In one of his eyes, incrusted, was my sword.
“I lost all my life because I trusted you! All my life in this smelly howl, and you are going to pay, doesn’t matter how much it cost me… even if it’s the last thing I do. I will end with you, my friend, as you ended with me.”
The only way out was the crack , but the big dragon was standing in front of it.
Finally when Neikk jumped towards me, I jumped to his head and grabbed my sword, that was still incrusted on one of his eyes, climbed to his back and nailed my sword between his ribs.
The dragon shouted angrily and pushed his back against the wall trying to crush me, fortunately I wasn’t between his back and the wall.
All the cave moved. Stones began to fall from the roof.
“Gandaalf!! I will kill you! I will - ”
The voice stopped suddenly.
The roof of the cave was coming down.
I ran out through the crack as fast as I could.
…
When the cloud of dust disappeared t noticed that the crack didn’t exist anymore.
I looked for Neikk for a long time, but I couldn’t find him.
Deep in my heart I knew he wasn’t here anymore.
He had died trying to kill me.
I sat on a stone and cried for a long while. Neikk was my friend and he was the last dragon, the last good one, and the only one that could have helped us.
